Protecting pastoralist livelihoods through innovative drought insurance that safeguards livestock assets
IBLI is an innovative insurance product that protects pastoralists against drought-related livestock losses using satellite technology
Instead of assessing individual livestock losses, IBLI uses satellite data to measure forage availability. When pasture conditions fall below certain thresholds, automatic payouts are triggered to help pastoralists keep their animals alive during drought periods.
*TLU = Tropical Livestock Unit
Satellites continuously monitor vegetation using the Normalized Difference Vegetation Index (NDVI) to measure pasture conditions across different regions.
Current forage conditions are compared with historical averages. When conditions fall below the 25th percentile (trigger level), payouts begin.
When conditions reach the 5th percentile (exit level), full payouts are made automatically to help pastoralists purchase feed and keep livestock alive.
Encouraging financial inclusion through savings incentives
IBLI coverage is organized by Unit Areas of Insurance (UAI), which are geographic regions determined by factors such as:
March to May (Gu season)
October to December (Deyr season)
